Pittsburgh-based West Penn Allegheny Health System has agreed to pay the government $1.5 million to settle False Claims Act allegations, according to a Department of Justice report.
The government filed a complaint alleging the health system leased space to physicians at below-market rates to induce referrals of patients to WPAHS, in violation of the Anti-Kickback Statute and Stark Law. The government further alleged these referrals resulted in improper claims being submitted to federal healthcare programs, according to the report.
The matter was investigated by HHS' Office of Inspector General and the United States Attorney's Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania, and this settlement resolves all allegations made by the government against WPAHS.
