After years of social conservatives' attempts to defund Planned Parenthood, Congressional Republicans aim to cut off federal funding for the healthcare group in early 2017, Politico reported.
President Barack Obama in early January vetoed a budget bill passed by the Senate that eliminated money for Planned Parenthood and repealed the ACA. However, with Donald Trump at the helm next year, conservatives say it is only a matter of time before a defunding bill is signed into law, according to Politico.
"The entire movement is poised for a victory," said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of Susan B. Anthony List, an advocacy group that opposes abortion. "We have every assurance [from congressional leaders] that it's going to happen. Nobody is saying 'whether,' the question is 'when.'"
Federal law already prohibits Planned Parenthood from using taxpayer money for abortions. The organization uses federal money for family planning and other health services. However, anti-abortion groups argue funding the facilities enables the organization to provide abortions by freeing up funds for other services, according to the report.
