USC reaches $215M settlement over gynecologist sexual abuse scandal

The Los Angeles-based University of Southern California reached a $215 million settlement in a class-action lawsuit against the university and its former student health gynecologist, the Daily Beast reports.

Four things to know:

1. Gynecologist George Tyndall, MD, was fired from the university in 2017 for inappropriate sexual behavior. Many of the women who joined the class-action lawsuit claimed Dr. Tyndall photographed or videotaped them during medical exams, the report states.

2. Dr. Tyndall denied any wrongdoing and has not been charged with any crime. However, the Los Angeles district attorney's office said it received a total of 99 crime reports from police regarding the physician, according to the report.

3. Individual compensation from the settlement ranged from $2,500 to $250,000, depending on the person's experience with the physician. The agreement still requires court approval.

4. A representative for Dr. Tyndall told the Daily Beast he was unable to provide comment. USC Interim President Wanda Austin said in a statement that she was "encouraged by today's settlement filing, which takes another important step in healing our community."
