The University of New Mexico Hospital in Albuquerque is facing a class action lawsuit alleging the hospital provided substandard pediatric cancer care between 1977 and 1997, according to a report in the Albuquerque Journal.
The suit claims the hospital "gave children incorrect doses of chemotherapy, compounded drugs improperly, gave children improper medications and treatments, provided substandard care and released children without adequate instructions or arrangements for their continued care," according to the report. The suit blames the University of New Mexico for not providing proper oversight to the pediatric cancer program.
The suit was filed by a woman claiming improper care led to the death of her son in 1988, but the number of plaintiffs in the suit could grow to more than 1,000, according to the report.
