The Tennessee Supreme Court has ruled hospitals must release liens against patients once the hospital and their insurers have footed the bill, according to an Associated Press report.
Several emergency department patients filed a lawsuit against Memphis, Tenn.-based Regional Medical Center, which made its way in front of the Tennessee Supreme Court. The lawsuit alleged Regional Medical Center would file a lien against the patients, even when it was determined someone else may be liable for injuries, according to the report.
The Tennessee Supreme Court agreed with state law, which prohibits Regional Medical Center from maintaining its liens once the bill is taken care of, according to the report.
