The public hospital district that owns Valley Medical Center in Renton, Wash., is appealing a judge's dismissal of its lawsuit against University of Washington Medicine, which challenges the governance structure of their strategic alliance, according to a Renton Reporter report.
VMC and UW Medicine formed a strategic alliance in June 2011. Upon finalization of that agreement, Paul Ramsey, MD, CEO of UW Medicine, appointed eight additional members to VMC's five-member board, bringing the board total to 13 people.
Public Hospital District 1 claimed elected district commissioners could not delegate responsibilities for the public hospital to board members who had not been elected. Earlier this week, King County Superior Court Judge Michael Hayden dismissed the lawsuit, ruling that the governance structure was permitted under state law.
The public hospital district is appealing that decision to the Washington Supreme Court, according to the report.
