A New Jersey physician was convicted for submitting more than $5.4 million in fraudulent claims to Medicare as part of a telemarketing scheme.
Adarsh Gupta, MD, 51 of Sewell, signed thousands of prescriptions for orthotic braces for more than 2,900 Medicare beneficiaries, according to an April 26 Justice Department news release. Dr. Gupta was connected to these patients by telemarketers who convinced them to accept unnecessary braces. Dr. Gupta prescribed the braces after briefly speaking to the patients over the phone.
Dr. Gupta was convicted by a federal jury on three counts of healthcare fraud and two counts of false statements relating to health care matters, according to the release. He faces a maximum of 40 years in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 8.
