Parkland Memorial in Dallas Misses Deadline for $750k Fine

Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas missed its September deadline to pay a $750,000 fine, meaning the public hospital may now owe more money, according to a Dallas Morning News report.

Parkland Memorial was fined $1 million by the Texas Department of State Health Services in August after state officials identified several "egregious deficiencies" related to patient safety and quality at the hospital.

DSHS ordered the hospital to pay $750,000 within 30 days. If Parkland Memorial met that deadline and began complying with healthcare regulations, DSHS said it might be able to avoid paying the rest of the fine.

The Dallas Morning News obtained records that included an explanation from two hospital leaders to a DSHS employee for missing the deadline. Reportedly, Parkland Memorial had the payment "set up in their accounting section" for a wire transfer, but the individual designated for sending the transfer "resigned before it was sent," according to the report. The name of the resigned employee, or reason for his/her departure, was not disclosed.

DSHS is now considering whether to seek all or part of the remaining $250,000 from the initial $1 million fine, an agency spokesperson said in the report.
