Pilar Garcia Lorenzo, owner of Tampa, Fla.-based Gold Care Home Health Service, was convicted Thursday for her role in a multimillion-dollar healthcare fraud and money laundering scheme, according to the Department of Justice.
Evidence presented at trial showed Gold Care submitted false claims to Medicare in 2014. The fraudulent claims were for home health services that had not been prescribed by a physician or were never provided.
Medicare reimbursed Gold Care approximately $2.5 million for the fraudulent claims. Most of the proceeds from the fraud scheme, about $2 million, were laundered through fictitious shell companies in Hialeah, Fla., according to the DOJ.
Ms. Lorenzo is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 5, 2017.
