Operations manager pleads guilty to role in $70.6M Medicare fraud scheme

A New York operations manager pleaded guilty to conspiring to offer and pay kickbacks to physicians in exchange for ordering unnecessary brain scans.

Timothy Doyle, 45, of Selden, N.Y., pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to violate the Anti-Kickback Statute, according to a Jan. 3 Justice Department news release.

From June 2013 through at least September 2020, Mr. Doyle conspired with others, including two managers from a mobile medical diagnostics company that performed transcranial Doppler scans, to enter into kickback agreements with physicians. The agreement allegedly involved paying physicians based on the number of TCD ultrasounds the doctors ordered.

The scheme resulted in $70.6 million in fraudulent claims submitted to Medicare.

Mr. Doyle faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
