Nearly 300 Patients Allege Unnecessary Heart Care at Saint Joseph-London in Kentucky

Attorneys have filed suit on behalf of more than 280 patients who claim they received unnecessary heart procedures at Saint Joseph-London (Ky.) hospital, according to a Lexington Herald-Leader report.

Although the details of the suits vary based on the claims of each case, overarching allegations include cardiologists installing unnecessary pacemakers and stents and performing unneeded cardiac catheterizations. Some patients also claim they underwent unnecessary open-heart surgery, according to the report.

The suits allege that the cardiologists performed the procedures to increase reimbursement from Medicare, Medicaid, private payors and patients. The patients also allege that Saint Joseph-London was complicit in a "civil conspiracy" by allowing physicians to work at the hospital and not providing proper oversight. The suits seek unspecified damages.

The time span of the alleged improper activity was not included in the report.

A spokesperson for Saint Joseph-London said the hospital is aware of the complaint and is taking the allegations seriously, but could not comment further, according to the report.
