Approximately 250 former patients who received heart care at St. Joseph Medical Center in Baltimore may receive a total settlement of $32.5 million after a cardiologist allegedly implanted unnecessary stents in their hearts, according to a Baltimore Business Journal report.
Mark Midei, MD, allegedly implanted stents without medical cause into hundreds of patients. Dr. Midei and St. Joseph — which was owned by Denver-based Catholic Health Initiatives but then sold to University of Maryland Medical System in Baltimore — faced hundreds of malpractice lawsuits over the allegations after nearly 600 patients were notified by the hospital in late 2009 they could have received unnecessary stents from Dr. Midei.
A neutral court representative has been tasked to determine how much money each of the roughly 250 patients will receive out of the lump settlement. The Baltimore Business Journal reports the majority of the settlement will be paid by St. Joseph and CHI, while Dr. Midei's insurance company will pick up $1.5 million.
