Mother, daughter pharmacy owners accused of $12M Medicare fraud scheme

Two Florida women were indicted on charges stemming from an alleged scheme to defraud Medicare out of more than $12 million.

Mirosis Gonzalez, 58, and her daughter Berioska Sosa, 32, are accused of paying kickbacks and bribes to marketing and telemedicine companies in exchange for referrals of Medicare beneficiaries, as well as doctors’ orders and prescriptions, according to a Sept. 9 news release from the Justice Department.

The pair owned Sunrise-based Aviva Care Pharmacy, which did business as American Care Pharmacy, according to the release. The alleged scheme occured between August 2016 and May 2002. The women are accused of submitting more than $12 million in false claims to Medicare over that span, of which Medicare paid $8.4 million.
