Authorities charged a pharmacist in Dearborn, Mich., with billing Medicare and Medicaid for more prescriptions than were present in his inventory, according to ABC affiliate WXYZ.
A criminal complaint against Haytham Fakih was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan Dec. 29. According to the complaint, federal authorities accused Mr. Fakih of billing Medicare for medications he didn't dispense. He was also charged with billing for medications for deceased beneficiaries.
The scheme allegedly occurred over a four-year period, resulting in $1.2 million in overpayments from government payers. Officials' audit revealed Mr. Fakih had billed for 10 drugs that were not sufficiently stocked in his inventory in the quantities he reported, according to the complaint.
