Henry Lora, MD, a Miami-based physician, has been charged with participating in a Medicare fraud scheme that caused losses of more than $20 million, according to the Department of Justice.
According to the allegations in the indictment, Dr. Lora co-owned and operated Merfi Corp., a Miami-area clinic that employed physicians, physician assistants and other medical professionals. In exchange for kickbacks and bribes, Dr. Lora and his co-conspirators wrote prescriptions for home healthcare and other services for Medicare beneficiaries that were not medically necessary or not provided. Multiple home healthcare agencies billed Medicare for those services, according to the indictment.
Dr. Lora was charged with one count of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud and wire fraud and one count of conspiracy to defraud the U.S., receive healthcare kickbacks and make false statements relating to healthcare matters.
