The U.S. Department of Justice announced that the owner of a medical clinic pleaded guilty to participating in a Medicare fraud scheme.
Juan Villa, owner of Blessed Medical Clinic in Livonia, Mich., pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud. He admitted he hired patient recruiters to bribe Medicare beneficiaries with cash to visit the clinic and provide their information, including their Medicare numbers. Mr. Villa used this information to bill for medically unnecessary diagnostic tests and treatments, resulting in $2.4 million in fraudulent Medicare claims.
He faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
