Maryland oncology practice pays $851K to settle billing fraud allegation

A former Frederick, Md.-based oncology and hematology practice will pay $850,949 to settle allegations it improperly billed Medicare.

According to a Sept. 12 news release from the Justice Department, Frederick Oncology and Hematology Associates allegedly submitted improper claims for evaluation and management services to the federal government from 2013 to 2017.

The Justice Department alleged the practice billed for evaluation and management services using a diagnostic code that is only appropriate when a separate and distinct evaluation and management service is performed on the same day as a procedure or other service being performed on a patient.

The claims in the case are allegations only, and no determination of liability was made as part of the settlement.
