Man sues NYC hospital; claims he was beaten, called 'junkie' after seeking addiction treatment

A man who sought treatment for heroin addiction at Brooklyn, N.Y.-based Coney Island Hospital has filed a lawsuit alleging that a nurse at the public hospital called him a "junkie" before he was beaten by security officers, according to the New York Daily News.

Louis Mizrahi is suing the hospital's parent company, NYC Health + Hospitals, for the assault, which he claims happened on April 10, 2016. He alleges that the encounter with the nurse was prompted when he refused a strip search. Mr. Mizrahi then claims five security officers chased him off of hospital property and proceeded to punch and kick him, breaking his elbow.

"We will carefully review this complaint once we receive it. In the interim, we want to make categorically clear that the mission of NYC Health + Hospitals is to welcome and care for all. We respect our patients and always aim to provide a nurturing, supportive environment in which to help them live their healthiest lives," said a spokesman for NYC Health + Hospitals in an email to Becker's.
