Man accused of impersonating physician, performing surgery

A 54-year-old man has been charged with assault and battery after allegedly impersonating a physician and performing unauthorized cosmetic surgery on a woman in Los Angeles in July 2021.

Cristian Perez Latorre faces one count of assault with a deadly weapon, one count of battery causing serious injury, and six counts of practicing medicine without certification. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in state prison.

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón alleges that Mr. Latorre conducted the unlicensed cosmetic procedure in July 2021 and later treated the victim for infections resulting from the surgery. Prosecutors also claim that Mr. Latorre provided further medical treatment for additional complications in August 2021.

Details about the specific complications, the type of cosmetic surgery performed, or the setting in which the procedure was allegedly conducted have not been released by the DA's office. Mr. Latorre was arrested Aug. 22.

"When an individual masquerades as a doctor and performs medical procedures without a license, it not only endangers lives but also erodes the essential trust between patients and legitimate healthcare providers," Mr. Gascón said. "This act of deception threatens the integrity of our healthcare system and the confidence that the community has in those dedicated to their well-being. We are committed to seeking justice for the victim, holding Mr. Latorre accountable and restoring the trust that has been so grievously violated."
