Shreveport-based Louisiana State University filed a lawsuit Sept. 25 against Biomedical Research Foundation, the private manager of two LSU hospitals, according to the Greater Baton Rouge Business Report.
The lawsuit, which was filed in 19th Judicial District Court in Baton Rouge, came one day after LSU notified BRF it was terminating its management contract. The 44-page lawsuit details the university's reasons for ending its contract with BRF. BRF issued a statement Sept. 24 saying it would not relinquish management, according to the report.
The suit asks the court to enforce the termination of the contract between the two parties within 10 days of its filing.
LSU has accused BRF of attempting to undermine the leadership of LSU Health Sciences Center-Shreveport by allegedly trying to have the chancellor and vice chancellors removed from their roles; failing to support and promote the hospital's academic mission; failing to cooperate and collaborate with LSU; and failing to establish a sustainable and competitive business model, according to the report.
Additionally, LSU alleges BRF undermined LSU's medical education by preventing residents and fellows from accessing hospital data and other resources necessary to perform research.
BRF managers have repeatedly denied any accusations of mismanagement and say they have followed the terms of the contract.
BRF initially secured the contract to operate the northern Louisiana hospitals in 2013 under a no-bid contract as part of Gov. Bobby Jindal's plan to privatize the state's charity hospital system.
