Law firm investigates alleged overbilling at California health system

Accusations that Walnut Creek, Calif.-based John Muir Health wrongfully charged residents for drug tests are under investigation by law firm Hagens Berman.

Patients allegedly received unexpected charges upward of $6,000, the law firm said in a news release shared with Becker's on Feb. 22. Patients with insurance have allegedly been saddled with large copays and deductibles for services they did not request or consent to.

Hagens Berman attorneys said patients may have rights to get their money back through consumer-protection laws.

A spokesperson for John Muir Health told Becker's that the law firm has not contacted the system.

"Their client advertising lacks any detail as to why they believe a billing error may have occurred or the nature of any such error," the John Muir spokesperson said. "If the law firm provides sufficient information in the future, we would certainly evaluate it. John Muir Health works diligently to ensure compliance with all billing and payer requirements. Our customer service department is also always available to help with any patient billing questions."
