Kings County Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y., is facing a whistle-blower suit alleging hospital administrators knew incompetence at the hospital's laboratory was causing life-changing misdiagnoses, according to a New York Daily News report.
The suit, instigated by whistle-blower Lili Hutchinson, a lab technician at the hospital for more than 20 years, claims laboratory technicians have misdiagnosed both HIV and hepatitis C patients since 2002. Ms. Hutchinson says she informed hospital administrators about the problem, but faced retaliation in the form of transfers to other labs and denied promotions, according to the report.
The hospital and the city deny the accusations. "The people of Brooklyn can be confident that testing results at Kings County Hospital are accurate and that the hospital's laboratory complies with all relevant standards and protocols," the city's Health and Hospital Corporation said in a statement, according to the report.
