Healthcare well represented on list of biggest False Claims Act settlements of 2014

The Department of Justice recovered $2.3 billion in civil settlements from healthcare industry False Claims Act settlements this year, with some of the settlements making the list of the biggest False Claims Act settlements across all industries for 2014, according to a PBS NewsHour report.

The banking industry led the pack with the biggest false claims settlements of the year, with Bank of America entering into a $16.65 billion settlement and JP Morgan Chase agreeing to a $614 million settlement.

The following two healthcare industry settlements made the list for the biggest settlements of 2014.

1. Baton Rouge, La.-based Amedisys, one of the country's largest providers of home health services, and its affiliates agreed to pay $150 million to resolve allegations brought under the False Claims Act, Stark Law and the Anti-Kickback Statute.

3. Cincinnati, Ohio-based Omnicare — the nation's largest provider of pharmaceuticals and pharmacy services to nursing homes — agreed to pay $124.24 million to settle allegations that it violated the False Claims Act and Anti-Kickback Statute.
