A former claims assistant at the Veterans Benefits Administration Office in Huntington, W.Va., was sentenced to six months in federal prison Jan. 21 for illegally accessing six of his fellow veterans' medical records, according to the Charleston Gazette-Mail.
Jeffrey Scott Miller pleaded guilty in September 2019 to six counts of using a computer for unauthorized access to government documents. Investigators discovered that he had been wrongfully viewing and copying the medical records of six people.
In one instance, Mr. Miller took a photo of one of the individual's medical record and sent it via text message to another person. Investigators claimed Mr. Miller accessed the medical records of his coworkers between Jan. 24 and May 24, 2018.
Mr. Miller had faced up to one year in prison, a $100,000 fine and one year of supervised release for each of the six charges.
