The former CEO of Parkway Hospital in Queens, N.Y., has pled guilty to bribing former New York State Senator Carl Kruger, according to a news release from the Federal Bureau of Investigations.
Robert Aquino oversaw Parkway when it was scheduled to close in the summer of 2008. He led the hospital to make $60,000 in payments to a company in which Sen. Kruger had an interest. The company, called Adex Management, then paid half of that $60,000 to Olympian Strategic Development — a consulting company operated by Michael Turano, who had ties with Sen. Kruger.
Mr. Aquino stated that the payments were made with the understanding that Sen. Kruger would help keep Parkway open in return. Mr. Aquino, who has pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit bribery, faces a maximum potential penalty of five years in prison and a fine of $250,000 or twice the gross gain or loss from the offense.
Sen. Kruger has already pled guilty to two counts of conspiracy to commit honest services fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit bribery. Mr. Turano has also already pled guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit bribery. Both are scheduled to be sentenced on April 26.
