The former CEO of Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City has been arrested and charged in a $1.4 million kickback scheme that spanned for a decade.
John R. Reynolds served as CEO from 1997 until 2006 and allegedly participated in three separate schemes during that time period. He has been accused of receiving approximately $420,000 in kickbacks from hospital vendors, $298,500 from a hospital employee and roughly $670,000 from a British-based healthcare organization.
Mr. Reynolds is also charged with not disclosing information about his involvement in outside consulting work and conflicts of interest to the HSS board of directors. He also allegedly made false statements to HHS and Office of Inspector General agents in May 2008 about individuals and entities involved in kickback schemes.
Mr. Reynolds, who was arrested yesterday at his home in Massachusetts, has been charged with one count of racketeering and one count of making false statements. He faces a maximum sentence of 25 years.
