A former army surgeon was sentenced to federal prison for his role in a $7.3 million scam, according to the Washington Times.
Richard Craig Rooney, MD, of Medina, Wash., was sentenced to 2.5 years Sept. 25 in El Paso, Texas.
Dr. Rooney was a lieutenant colonel and was stationed at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso and Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood, Texas. In January, he pleaded guilty to charges of aiding and abetting acts affecting a personal financial interest, according to the report.
Dr. Rooney allegedly recommended military use of surgical products from certain companies for whom he served as a consultant. He did not disclose having a financial interest in the firms.
In addition to serving a prison sentence, Dr. Rooney must also forfeit nearly $4.3 million and pay a $15,000 fine, according to the report.
