Florida physician injured after alleged attack by patient's son

An OB-GYN working at Miami Beach, Fla.-based Mount Sinai Medical Center was attacked by a patient's son and hospitalized with severe injuries, local10.com reported Oct. 15.

Steven Silvers, MD, arrived at the hospital Oct. 14 around 8:15 a.m. to begin his shift. He was then allegedly confronted in the hallway by Ventura Del Castillo Perez, the 19-year-old son of one of his patients. Mr. Perez said he was upset about the prescription Dr. Silvers gave his mother and wanted to speak with the physician about malpractice and his bad Yelp reviews, according to the arrest report.

"[Mr. Perez] then went to the elevator to leave, and Dr. Silvers followed," the arrest report said. "The defendant stated that Dr. Silvers had his foot on the elevator door and attempted to grab his phone. The defendant stated that he then picked up the physician and body slammed him in self-defense."

Dr. Silvers sustained a concussion, hematoma on the right side of his head, swollen collarbone, bruised temple, brain contusion and two broken ribs. He was hospitalized and is receiving treatment for his injuries.

Mr. Perez faces charges of aggravated battery and battery on an emergency medicine care provider. He is currently being held in a local correctional center without bond awaiting his next hearing.

"Mount Sinai's top priority is the safety of our patients, visitors and employees," a hospital spokesperson told Becker's. "We are aware of the occurrence that took place on our Miami Beach campus involving a physician, who is not employed by the medical center. While no Mount Sinai employees were involved, to the extent that we are aware of any incident, the appropriate authorities are contacted immediately and have our full cooperation."
