Florida lawmakers move to restrict abortion access to 6 weeks

Florida stands to be one of the most restrictive states in the country when it comes to abortion, if Gov. Ron DeSantis signs legislation passed April 13 that would prohibit abortions after six weeks, according to The New York Times.

Mr. DeSantis has already said he will sign the six-week abortion ban into law.

After Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court in 2022, "no state saw a greater increase in the number of legal abortions performed each month than Florida," the Times said, citing an April 11 report on how access to abortion has changed since Roe was overturned.

A year ago, Florida permitted abortions until 24 weeks. Lawmakers limited access to abortions to 15 weeks in July 2022. This limitation is being challenged in court.

"The new six-week ban is contingent, in part, on whether the Florida Supreme Court upholds the 15-week restriction," the Times reported.
