A European physician filed a lawsuit Sept. 9 against the FDA and other government officials, accusing them of seizing some of the abortion pills she prescribed to U.S. patients, according to NPR.
Rebecca Gomperts, MD, PhD, claims that since March, federal officials have seized between three and 10 doses of abortion drugs she prescribed through Aid Access, an organization she founded that provides online presciptions for abortion-inducing medications.
The lawsuit also claims that the government blocked Aid Access from receiving payment from some patients.
The lawsuit comes a few months after the FDA issued a warning letter to Aid Access, accusing the company of violating federal law by selling misbranded drugs and facilitating the improper distribution of drugs.
As a result of the FDA warning letter, Dr. Gomperts stopped prescribing the abortion pills between mid-March and mid-May, but has since returned to prescribing them.
Richard Hearn, Dr. Gomperts' attorney, argues that she has helped thousands of women in the U.S. safely and effectively end their pregnancies. He added that for women who live long distances from clinics, abortion pills ordered online may be their only option.
The goal of the lawsuit is to prevent the FDA and other government agencies from seizing the medications in the future, according to NPR.
