Beth Israel Deaconess Undergoes Federal Billing Investigation

Federal investigators are looking into the billing practices at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston to determine whether it overbilled Medicare for inpatient stays, according to a Boston Globe report.

Investigators are reviewing six years of hospital records to determine whether inpatient stays could have been treated and billed less expensively as outpatient visits. Financial statements filed by Beth Israel say the investigation began in 2010 and its outcome could affect revenue, according to the report.

Federal officials did not provide a comment, according to the report. A Beth Israel spokesperson said that any problems identified will be addressed.
