A federal audit revealed that St. Luke's Boise (Idaho) Medical Center improperly billed Medicare for certain drug injections, resulting in $83,000 in overpayments the hospital has since refunded, according to an Idaho Statesman report.
Federal auditors examined a set of six Medicare payments to St. Luke's Boise from May 2008 through August 2011. They specifically looked at payments for injections to treat certain cancers and rapid heart rate, deeming these payments "potentially at risk for billing errors," according to the report.
Auditors concluded the hospital improperly charged Medicare for twice to 10 times as many injection units as it should have, according to the report. St. Luke's Boise agreed with those findings and attributed the overbilling to clerical and billing system errors. The hospital says it has refunded the money and implemented changes to ensure the overbilling does not recur, according to the report.
