The Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry has filed a lawsuit on behalf of its member hospitals to prevent a ballot measure capping the salary of hospital executives, according to Ahwatukee Foothills News.
The proposed measure would cap the pay of hospital executives at the same salary as the president of the United States: $450,000, including expenses, according to the report.
Members of the Service Employees International Union initially pushed for the measure. The group started a petition, which turned in more than 281,000 signatures, according to the report.
Attorney Roopali Desai claims one of the challenges the union faces are the signatures themselves. Ms. Desai said that because petitioners gathered signatures before a proper campaign had been formed, every single signature is invalid, according to the report.
A hearing for the ballot measure is scheduled for next month. The measure would only apply to hospital administrators and managers. It would not affect physicians and other health professionals.
