7 recent lawsuits challenging the PPACA

The following is a roundup of recent lawsuits challenging various provisions of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

1. Appeals court rejects tax challenge to PPACA
In a 3-0 ruling, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit ruled against a conservative group that filed a lawsuit alleging Congress violated the origination clause of the Constitution by imposing new taxes when it created the PPACA.

2. House committee approves resolution allowing lawsuit to proceed against President Obama
In a 7-4 vote, the House Rules Committee approved a resolution that gives the House GOP authorization to proceed with its lawsuit against President Barack Obama, which is narrowly focused on the PPACA.

3. Federal judge dismisses senator's lawsuit over PPACA
U.S. District Judge William Griesbach dismissed the lawsuit Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) filed contesting the provision of the PPACA that requires Congress members and their staffs to only enroll in health plans created under the PPACA or offered on the health insurance exchanges.

A three-judge panel from the Fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals unanimously held low- and middle-income Americans in all states can legally receive subsidies for health insurance under the PPACA, even if their state uses a federally-run health insurance exchange.

6. Supreme Court: Employers can deny contraceptive coverage
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled business owners may refuse to provide their employees with insurance coverage for contraceptives if the owners have religious objections to certain forms of birth control.

7. SCOTUS issues second hit to contraceptive mandate
The U.S. Supreme Court issued an injunction allowing Wheaton (Ill.) College, a nonprofit Christian college, to stop providing contraception under the PPACA and to bypass filing a form with its insurer asserting its religious objections for doing so.
