5 states sue over Obama administration transgender health policy

Texas and four other Republican-led states sued the federal government Tuesday over extending its healthcare nondiscrimination law to transgender individuals, according to a Reuters report.

The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Texas by Texas, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Kentucky and Kansas. The states sued on behalf three medical organizations, two of which are affiliated with Christian groups.

In filing the suit, the plaintiffs said the move "represents a radical invasion of the federal bureaucracy into a doctor's medical judgment," according to the article.

Plaintiffs also argued medical groups would be forced to violate their religious beliefs "and perform harmful medical transition procedures or else suffer massive financial liability," the article states, citing the suit.

HHS, named as a defendant in the suit, was not immediately available for comment to Reuters.
