Police recovered a $30,000 Torah that was stolen from Louisville, Ky.-based Jewish Hospital this past weekend, according to the Courier Journal.
Louisville police confirmed the return of the religious book on Oct. 17, stating the Torah suffered "minimal damage," the report states.
Law enforcement arrested David J. Macon Jr., on Oct. 16, according to an arrest report. Mr. Macon reportedly stole the artifact just before 6 a.m. on Oct. 14. The alleged theft was captured on security camera video.
On Oct. 16, Jewish Hospital security saw Mr. Macon and recognized him from the security footage. The arrest report states Mr. Macon was wearing the same clothing from the night of the alleged theft.
Mr. Macon was charged with theft by unlawful taking and third-degree burglary. He pleaded not guilty to the charges during his arraignment Oct. 17. He was held on $15,000 cash bail and ordered not to have contact with the hospital. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 26.
In an Oct. 17 statement obtained by the Courier Journal, Jewish Hospital said it was "grateful to the individuals who found and recovered our Torah."
"[The Torah] was secured, but intentionally kept in a public area to be in the presence of our patients, employees and all that we serve. It is unfortunate that anyone would tamper with such a sacred document. An early assessment of the Torah, indicates minimal damage. We continue to cooperate with Louisville Metro Police on the investigation," the statement said.
