St. Clairsville, Ohio-based Belmont Cardiology and its president, Devender Batra, MD, have agreed to pay $1 million for their involvement in EastOhioRegionalHospital in St. Martins Ferry and Wheeling, W. Va.-based Ohio Valley Medical Center submitting false claims for prohibited referrals to Medicare, according to the Department of Justice.
From 2009 to 2010, East Ohio Regional Hospital and Ohio Valley Medical Center allegedly entered into "improper compensation arrangements" with Dr. Batra and Belmont Cardiology that involved "prohibited referrals," according to the report.
The U.S. Attorney's Office has already resolved claims against Ohio Valley Medical Center and East Ohio Regional Hospital for entering into improper compensation arrangements with Dr. Batra, Belmont Cardiology and other healthcare providers, according to the report.
