From HCA facing a discrimination lawsuit from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission to St. Luke's Health System winning $52.5 million in a harassment case, here are 12 hospital lawsuits and settlements Becker's has reported since July 25:
1. The family of Patrice Wilson, a nurse who was kidnapped outside of Detroit Medical Center — where she was employed — and later found dead, is suing the hospital and Tenet Healthcare for $200 million.
2. Heritage Valley Health System, based in Beaver, Pa., is facing a lawsuit for allegedly using pixel tracking technology on its website that allowed third parties to gain access to some patients' protected health information.
3. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission is accusing Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare of discriminating against an employee and retaliating against him when the employee reported discrimination.
4. An administrative judge reversed a decision by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services to grant Asheville, N.C.-based Mission Health a certificate of need for a freestanding emergency department.
5. A judge denied Newark, Del.-based ChristianaCare Health Services and ChristianaCare Health System's motion to dismiss a claim of intentional infliction of emotional distress after its staff performed an autopsy on a fetus without consent.
6. James Manazer, MD, is suing Chillicothe, Ohio-based Adena Regional Medical Center alleging defamation and wrongful termination after he reported alleged concerns about a cardiac procedure.
7. Lansing, Mich.-based Sparrow Health System agreed to pay $671,310 to settle allegations that it violated the False Claims Act by misuse of "incident-to" billing.
8. A patient and a former employee of Louisville, Ky.-based Norton Healthcare filed a lawsuit against the health system after it experienced a cyber event that may have compromised individuals' protected health information.
9. Valley Children's Hospital in Madera, Calif., is facing a lawsuit from neighboring property owners alleging private nuisance and trespassing.
10. Philadelphia-based Thomas Jefferson University agreed to pay $2.7 million to resolve allegations it misused and improperly retained federal funds that were intended to be used for student loans.
11. Chicago-based Rush Health is facing a lawsuit that alleges that the health system shared patient health information with Google and other third parties.
12. An Idaho jury ordered Ammon Bundy, Diego Rodriguez, the People's Rights Network, Freedom Man Press, and the Bundy campaign for governor to pay $52.5 million to Boise-based St. Luke's Health System and other plaintiffs in a lawsuit alleging harassment and intimidation against St. Luke's and its team members.
