As Bakersfield, Calif.-based Kern Medical Center tries to slash $6.5 billion from its budget, the hospital may turn to a hiring freeze, voluntary furloughs and other workforce changes, according to a report by The Bakersfield Californian.
The hospital is also evaluating staffing levels throughout the hospital and working to reduce the use of overtime, according to the report. Right now, layoffs are not on the table as part of the efforts to cut the budget.
The hospital's CFO, Sandra Martin, told The Bakersfield Californian that Kern Medical Center has been over-budgeted for a long time and is now working to re-size its budget.
