Interfaith Medical Center, a bankrupt hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y., is expected to begin shutting down operations next month, according to a Crain's New York Business report.
Interfaith filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last December, and the hospital has come close to shuttering its doors several times. Most recently, hospital and state officials attempted mediation to avoid closure, but alternative deals were not able to be reached.
Interfaith will officially start its closure process on Jan. 7, and an Interfaith spokeswoman confirmed to Crain's that all operations will come to an end on Jan. 26. Interfaith, which will become the 11th hospital in New York City to close since 2007, will lay off 1,545 people within two weeks, according to the report.
In October, Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center, a teaching hospital also in Brooklyn, had been in negotiations to take over Interfaith, but the sides could not reach a consensus. Kingsbrook will assume some of Interfaith's outpatient services and clinics, effective Jan. 26.
Bill de Blasio, New York City's incoming mayor who has advocated on behalf of the city's struggling hospitals, said his administration will "fight" to find cost savings at Interfaith and keep the hospital open, according to a Capital New York report. Interfaith has lost almost $30 million in operations since it filed for bankruptcy, and the hospital's liabilities surpass its assets by almost $200 million.
