Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, Maine, will close its endoscopy unit by the end of November, resulting in 21 layoffs, according to a Cape Cod Online report.
Nurses, booking clerks, secretaries and technicians will be affected by the unit's closure. The closure is tied to plans to expand the emergency center, since the expansion will take over the endoscopy unit's space, according to the report.
"We value each and every one of our employees…and no decision that changes the employment picture is an easy one. At the same time, the business community and public policy leaders have asked us to do things differently, and we want to be part of the solution to the healthcare crisis," Michael Lauf, president and CEO of Cape Cod Healthcare, said, according to the report.
Starting in December, the unit's patients will be sent to other providers in the area, such as Cape & Islands Endoscopy in Hyannis and Falmouth Hospital Outpatient Surgical Center in North Falmouth, Cape Cod Online reported.
