Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial Hospital in Demopolis, Ala., is closing its labor and delivery unit and laying off employees to cut costs, according to a Demopolis Times report.
The number of employees affected by the cuts has not been released, but 5 to 10 percent of the hospital's staff could be laid off, according to the report. Bryan W. Whitfield Memorial employs roughly 350 people.
The hospital has lost money as a result of Medicaid disproportionate share payment cuts and the federal sequester's cuts to Medicare, according to the report.
