8 latest hospital, health system layoffs

The following layoffs or workforce reductions were reported by Becker's Hospital Review in the last three weeks. They are listed below by the number of employees or positions affected.

1. Detroit Medical Center is looking into outsourcing its housekeeping services, which could lead to 565 layoffs. The outsourcing decision will be made before Dec. 1.

2. Nashville, Tenn.-based Hospital Corporation of America is closing Edward White Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla., and the hospital filed a notice with the state indicating it would lay off 354 employees. About 85 percent of affected employees could transfer to other HCA West Florida facilities, however.

3. Asheville, N.C.-based Mission Health eliminated 130 jobs as part of a reorganization plan. However, the six-hospital system plans to add 184 new jobs to handle outpatient services growth and mental health services.

4. Detroit Medical Center Surgery Hospital in Madison Heights, Mich., is closing due to flood damage, and the hospital's 127 employees have been laid off. DMC is working to find alternate positions for the affected employees.

5. Sharon (Pa.) Regional Health System announced plans to cut the equivalent of 87 full-time jobs, affecting administrative, technical, clerical and clinical positions.

6. Indianapolis-based St. Vincent Health is closing St. Vincent Seton Specialty, a long-term acute-care hospital in Lafayette, Ind., a move that will affect up to 83 employees.

7. Eastern Main Healthcare Systems in Brewer is in the process of eliminating 43 IT positions to avoid a budget shortfall.

8. Washington County Hospital, a critical access hospital in Plymouth, N.C., plans to lay off 25 employees in October.
