New lab blood test can assess organ damage from COVID-19

Eurofins Viracor Laboratories is offering a new blood test that can assess organ damage from COVID-19, Kansas City Business Journal reported recently.

The Lee's Summit, Mo., lab signed an agreement with Ithaca, N.Y.-based Cornell University to commercialize the blood test, according to the March 28  report. Instead of a biopsy, physicians can use the test to look at circulating cell-free DNA, which indicates organ damage.

The test can narrow organ damage down to tissue and cell type, which other cell-free DNA tests struggle to do. Targeting the damage helps physicians identify whether a COVID-19 patient is suffering muscle breakdown due to being bedridden or a more serious issue, like lung damage.
