Providence to use a blood test to detect cancer

Renton, Wash.-based Providence is expanding its partnership with healthcare company Grail to give patients access to a blood test that can detect hard-to-diagnose cancers.

Under the partnership, Providence's 52 hospitals will use Grail's Galleri test, a test that can detect more than 50 types of cancers using a single drop of blood, according to an April 4 press release from Grail.

"As a complement to current cancer screening programs, we believe the novel Galleri test offers an innovative way to assist with early cancer detection, especially with patients at high risk for difficult to detect cancers," said Ora Karp Gordon, MD, regional medical director of Providence's clinical genetics and genomics program.

St. Louis-based Mercy is also using these tests in 11 of its hospital's labs.
