GenAI in healthcare — 3 takeaways on growing use cases

Generative AI (GenAI) is gaining momentum in healthcare as more organizations apply it to a variety of needs, from documentation and clinical decision support to patient engagement.

GenAI application was a major theme in an executive roundtable sponsored by Health Recovery Solutions (HRS) at Becker's 9th Annual Health IT + Digital Health + RCM Conference. The discussion was led by two HRS leaders: Jenna Kowalski, vice president of clinical innovation, and Doug Lang, vice president of strategic partnerships.

Three key takeaways were:

  1. Most GenAI pilots center around clinical documentation and communication.

Most organizations' initial forays into GenAI involve ambient listening and note-taking, along with generating first draft responses to patient inquiries.

"Patient calls and messages are the biggest in-basket burden at our organization," one roundtable attendee said.

However, attendees also noted some buy-in challenges surrounding the broader adoption of GenAI. Older clinicians may initially be more resistant to it, while the learning curve of GenAI technologies can discourage their use because of the additional time commitment.

  1. Improved clinical decision-making is an emerging use case for GenAI.

One example is a GenAI-powered solution for emergency rooms and triage. In a matter of seconds, a GenAI solution assesses patients' vital sign measurements and produces a prompt for a possible diagnosis. One nursing leader at the roundtable discussion said the tool has been very helpful in detecting pre-eclampsia and sepsis and has provided clinical guidance.

  1. HRS's GenAI nursing assistant JAIN enables teams to deliver effective care at scale.

JAIN is a care team-facing chatbot that supports on-demand patient data retrieval, summary and analysis of biometric and other data points, and enhanced data comprehension for more informed clinical decisions.

JAIN is currently under development as part of a collaborative initiative between Health Recovery Solutions (HRS) and Amazon Web Services (AWS).
