To meet industry standards and career needs of today's infection preventionists, the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology recently penned a career development guide.
About 40% of infection preventionists are nearing retirement age, APIC said in a May 3 news release, highlighting the need for workers to broaden their leadership skills. The guide details how to enter, develop competency and grow in the industry.
From paraprofessional to executive, APIC outlined recommended backgrounds, certifications, competencies and job titles for each career stage. Apart from healthcare, the guide also lists potential pathways in public health, research, education, consulting and nontraditional work settings.
