5 infection prevention guideline updates to know

The CDC and medical associations have released several new guidelines on infection prevention and control this year.

The updates come as hospitals nationwide work to address rising rates of heatlhcare-associated infections and regain progress lost during the pandemic. 

Five infection control guideline updates Becker's has reported on since May 1: 

1. The Society for Healthcare Epidemiology of America, Infectious Diseases Society of America, Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology, the American Hospital Association and The Joint Commission released updated recommendations to prevent catheter-associated urinary tract infections in acute care hospitals Aug. 25. 

2. The CDC unveiled a new hospital program aimed at enhancing sepsis care Aug. 24.

3. SHEA, IDSA, APIC, the American Hospital Association and The Joint Commission shared a new guidance for operationalizing infection prevention strategies in acute care settings July 11.  

4. The CDC published guidance May 11 on how to improve building ventilation to reduce the number of viral particles in the air and prevent respiratory infections.

5. The five medical groups previously mentioned also published new guidelines for surgical site infections May 4, marking the first major revision since 2014.
