Florida's Public Bert Fish Medical Center Considers Merger with Private Florida Hospital

Bert Fish Medical Center, a public hospital in New Smyrna Beach, Fla., is considering a merger with private, Orlando-based Florida Hospital, according to a report by the Daytona Beach News-Journal.

The two organizations have signed a letter of intent to explore a merger in which Florida Hospital, part of Adventist Health System, would provide management oversight to the now public hospital, according to the report.

Halifax Health, the area's largest public hospital, opposes the merger plans and instead is making a case for Bert Fish to merge with it. The two public hospitals previously had a partnership agreement that ended in 2004, according to the report.

The proposed agreement will now be discussed at the public hospital board's next meeting in late May. Hospital officials have not released the letter of intent, according to the report.
