National Nurses United, the country's largest nurses union with close to 185,000 members, seeks to make Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) the Democratic nominee for president, The Wall Street Journal reports.
The union plans to send at least 150 nurses to the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia as pro-Sen. Sanders delegates, in a last effort to help him land the nomination.
According to the report, the nurses want Democrats to embrace a single-payer, government-run health plan, which Sen. Sanders backs and Hillary Clinton opposes. Nurses heading to the convention told The Wall Street Journal they plan to join demonstrations there that target a commitment from the party for such a sweeping overhaul.
In the end, though, Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), a supporter of Ms. Clinton, predicted the nurses would line up behind Ms. Clinton if she wraps up the nomination, The Wall Street Journal reports.
"At the end of the day, the nurses will come home to Hillary," Sen. Boxer told the publication. "It's too soon for them right now."
